Since February 2016, the UK Government requires all tenants to prove their Right to Rent in the UK to their landlord or letting agent. This involves either an in-person meeting (at our office in St Albans) or if you meet the criteria, an online right to rent share code and video call.

If you opt for the In-Person Right to Rent Checks, then you must attend our office in person with the original versions of the specific document you will use to prove your Right to Rent.

Right to Rent Documents typically used by Nationality:
  • UK:
    • UK Passport
or
    • UK Birth Certificate AND Photo Driving Licence

  • EU/EEA/Swiss with Settled Status:
    • Biometric Residence Permit
or
    • Online Right to Rent Share Code (and video call to match your face to the online right to rent document)

  • Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and the USA:
    • Passport AND Proof of Entry into the UK in the past 6 months (ticket, boarding pass, or booking confirmation for plane, train, or rail travel)
or
    • Passport AND Visa
or
    • Biometric Residence Permit Card
      or
    • Online Right to Rent Share Code (and video call to match your face to the online right to rent document)

  • All Other Countries:
    • Passport AND Visa
or
    • Biometric Residence Permit Card
      or
    • Online Right to Rent Share Code (and video call to match your face to the online right to rent document)

Follow Up Checks:

If your Right to Rent is not unlimited, then you will be required to prove your Right to Rent again when your initial Right to Rent expires.

It is YOUR responsibility to comply with this requirement. Failure to comply may result in your tenancy being cancelled and you being reported to the Home Office/Border Agency.
